5th Grade Students Investigate the Properties of Light

In science, 5th grade students have been learning about how light impacts our lives.
They began the year with a series of hands-on and virtual investigations into the properties of light in order to discover how light travels, what happens when light interacts with matter, and why we see colored light.

In collaboration with Dalton Theater Department Teacher Meg Zeder, Lighting Designer/HS Assistant Director for Operations Charlie Stewert, and Production Manager Sarah Mars, 5th grade students took a trip down the Martin Theater to learn how colored light is used by lighting designers to tell stories on stage. From the lights' ability to set the tone of a scene, draw the audience’s eye to the main character, and even the considerations about how colored light interacts with costumes, props, and sets, students were able to experience how all of their knowledge of the properties of light are applied in real life scenarios.

In their upcoming science research project, 5th graders will have the opportunity to practice their research skills while examining how the properties of light impact life in ways beyond the theater, focusing on issues of equity and social justice.
