Visiting Mexico for Work & Play

A group of high school students and teachers spent two weeks in Mexico teaching English and helping construct a fence for a school.
After school ended in June, high school students participated in a two-week community service trip to Mexico in a town called Tlaziaco in the state of Oaxaca. Students Lydia Martin, Arielle Ostrager, Esteban Jefferson, Matthew Lawrence, Molly Silberberg, Tanvir Gopal, Christopher Estrella and Sarah Rosenthal, accompanied by their Spanish teachers Carlos San Juan and Michele Viard, stayed with local families and worked everyday at a school in a town called Agua Zarca, half an hour away from Tlaxiaco. Each morning, Dalton students taught English to local students, and in the afternoon they helped construct a fence for the school. In the last two days students toured Oaxaca, visting the archeological site of Monte-Alban and Mitla, churches and the open market. In this worthwhile, total immersion experience – which the language department hopes to offer again – students spoke Spanish with their teachers as well as with their families.
