Little Dalton Post Office: Learning About Mail Delivery
As part of the House 46 neighborhood study, first graders learned about how the mail delivery system works.
After visiting and reading about the post office, the students discussed how to set up their own post office. They decided that they needed collection boxes, cubbies to sort the mail, mailboxes for each House, postage stamps, date and cancellation stamps, posters for advertising, a sign stating post office hours and a price chart. Each child designed a stamp.
Children were also responsible for collecting and delivering the mail: First they picked up and brought mail back to House 46. Each day the mail was counted and then date stamped and canceled using a "Dalton Mail" stamp. Next, all mail was sorted and placed into mail carrier bags for delivery. H46 managed stamp and envelope sales, too, selling each for 10 cents and creating new supplies as needed. The children voted to donate all proceeds to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Running the Little Dalton Post Office was hard work, but the children loved it! They felt a sense of accomplishment and pride knowing that their hard work will help to make a positive difference in the world.
