A Special Time With Illustrator and Author, David Macaulay

Friday, November 13th proved lucky for the First Program. All kindergarten and first grade students attended a special House 91 session in which Dalton’s Original Minds scholar, illustrator and author, David Macaulay, was our special guest. He has produced numerous books including The Way Things Work, Building Big and Castle.

In our gymnasium, David worked up front with his sketchbook and an Elmo (a document camera) so that students could actually watch him draw on the spot. They brought their sketchbooks and a pencil and were able to draw along with him. He inspired First Programers to imagine new and unusal animal pets and to draw them in their sketchbooks. As he spoke to us, he kept on drawing and so did everyone else! You’ll find a video of this unforgettable experience in the First Program at http://intranet.dalton.org/fp/events/2009-10/DavidMacaulayH91.mov

His sketches from this visit may be found either on the http://blogs.dalton.org/sketchbooks/  blog or hanging on display in the Hurst Library at 91st street shortly.
