Dalton Students Organize a Yelegram Campagin for Haitian School

With the Dalton students’ typical energy, enthusiasm and efficiency a brigade of over 90 students organized a massive "Yeligram Campaign" to raise funds for the Notre Dame du Perpétuel Secours, a school in Haiti which collapsed after the recent earthquake. Over 90 high school students worked together to sell — and label, package and deliver — 1,262 "yelegrams" to members of the Dalton community. In an organizational feat, students from several foreign language classes and clubs – under the always encouraging guidance of French teacher Tracy Christopher -- divided into committees to smoothly execute the massive drive.
Yelegram alludes to a song by Haitian-by-way-of-Brooklyn rap artist named Wyclef Jean, whose song "Ye’le" inspired the transposition of "telegram "-- a message of support -- to "yelegram" -- a shout-out of support for the Haitian community and also a message of thanks for all those in the Dalton community.

A Communications committee was responsible for getting the word out while a Sales committee armed with over pre-printed labels sold the yelegrams over a two-week period. Ass each Yelegram was purchased, the seller carefully noted the name of the giver and recipient as well as where it should be delivered. A Procurement committee purchased over 6,000 pieces of candy and 600 baggies and collected re-cycled paper bags to be used for the final delivery. Over a busy three-day period, the Production committee sorted the labels first by delivery location, then by recipient. Production team members affixed each label to a baggie, stuffed each baggie with five pieces candy per yelegram (some baggies had multiple labels for the same lucky recipient), then sorted the baggies for delivery to the appropriate location. On the final day, February 11th, the Delivery committee spread through the school distributing most yelegrams during House but also dropping off the treats at labs and offices.

A huge shout-out to the members of the Human Rights Club, the French Club, the GLASS Club, and the Community Service committee, in addition to many students in language classes involved in the Yelegram Campaign, which raised $1,395 in sales and additional donations!
