For about the last fifteen years, our fourth grade, as part of their house curriculum, has participated in a citizenship program. Designed to ease the transition from First Program to the Middle School, and complementing the fourth grade immigration study, children explore the responsibilities of becoming citizens in their "new country."
The curriculum is divided into four parts: arrival, settlement, becoming citizens and citizens in action. The assembly this Friday celebrated the students’ passage to becoming Big Dalton citizens. Ellen Stein, Head of School and the Director of the Middle School awarded children certificates of citizenship. Following the assembly, our new citizens were treated to an ice cream social in the cafeteria.
After this ceremony, fourth graders enjoy new privileges. Additionally, they enroll in community service electives.
