Dalton Students Take the Road Less Travelled in Grassroots China
From July 7 to August 4, 2013, nine Dalton students participated in the course, “Grassroots China,” an intensive summer fieldwork experience in Xizhou, Yunnan Province. View a complete gallery of photos.
A partnership with the Sidwell Friends School, the course offered students the opportunity to learn in and about a center of cultural preservation along the Southwest Silk Road bordering the Tibetan Plateau. Traveling by plane, bus, boat, bicycle, and horse cart, to name but a few modes of transportation, students contrasted the urban with the rural, considering the impact that China’s economic growth has had on the people and culture in the countryside. The photographs in this set show them studying architecture, agriculture, markets, religion, ethnicity, and handicrafts.
