First Program Faculty Launches Family Bookbag Project
At the First Program division meeting October 9, FP librarian Melissa Haile-Mariam, Assistant Director for Teaching and Learning Kelvina Butcher, and Director of Diversity Sage Sevilla facilitated a workshop focused on a diversity initiative called the Family Book Bag Project - a celebration of character and community through literature.
A thoughtful and inspiring selection of picture books appropriate for each grade level, which relate to themes of diversity and inclusion were reviewed and selected by grade level teams and specialists.
These books will be sent home with each child to share with his/her family on a rotating basis throughout the school year. The project, introduced prior to Ally Week, highlighted the themes of racial and cultural diversity, gender stereotypes, diverse family structures, and our responsibility for sustaining a peaceful community and world.
