During the week of November 17, 2013, a group of students from Robert College in Istanbul, Turkey presented an art installation that was on display in the 89th street lobby. The installation served as the culmination of a collaborative project between students in Istanbul and at Dalton that began in the winter of 2012.
The interdisciplinary project involved the study of ancient languages and contemporary art. Students from Dalton had the chance to visit Istanbul. Students from both schools researched historical material and collected data at archeological sites. They then had the chance to excavate cultural materials and artifacts in Istanbul. The project culminated in New York City with the installation titled, "Terra Firma," a collection of 70 digital images from Turkey, combined with the urban grids of both New York City and Istanbul. These grids formed a visual structure for the 70 contemporary artifacts discovered in Turkey and carried to Dalton by the group. The project was directed by Jeffrey Baykal-Rollins and co-curated by Deniz Demir.
