On November 13, Casey Brooks presented her in-house neuroscience research at the Neuroscience 2013 conference in San Diego. Neuroscience 2013 is the annual conference for the Society for Neuroscience that is attended by 30,000 neuroscientists to exchange new scientific knowledge about the brain. Casey's research, under the mentorship of Dalton computer science teacher Will Findley, discovered a new audiovisual illusion and the brain activity changes that appear to underpin it.
Casey's research was completed as part of the Dalton Science Research Program (DSRP), which is headed by Dalton science department chair Lisa Brizzolara. DSRP supports basic and applied research projects by students at Dalton. In addition, several classes have spun off of the main DSRP, including classes exposing students to current scientific research and the philosophical underpinnings of the primary scientific literature. Casey joined DSRP to perform her research after taking one of these courses. Many exciting research opportunities are in development at Dalton in DSRP and its affiliated courses.
