Dalton Interschool Science Symposium Draws Record Numbers

Dalton's student science researchers shined brightly at the well-attended 2014 Interschool Science Symposium. Science Department Chair, Lisa Brizzolara welcomed keynote speaker Dr. Suneet Mittal, a Dalton parent, physician and researcher. Dr. Mittal spoke about his research and career path as a cardiologist who specializes in Electrophysiology. The now annual Symposium showcases student projects, which stem from the Dalton Science Research Program.
In his speech, Dr. Mittal described his research focus on syncope and the important diagnositic impact of small, Internet-connected, heartmonitoring devices. Setting out to be a general practitioner, he was impassioned by his personal experience with syncope (fainting) and encouraged students to think about ways to identify passions in choosing their own research paths. One example he gave is the power of smart phones as remote diagnostic tools. Used as remote medical monitors, which automatically transmit data back to doctors, they have the potential to greatly improve access to and data recording of patients' vital signs 24/7.

This year's Symposium included student researchers from all of the Interschools, in addition to representatives from Friends Seminary.
