Artist Joseph Cornell created mysterious worlds tucked deftly into his box sculptures, juxtaposing images and objects to evoke a theme. After viewing and discussing Cornell's sculptures, fifth grade students composed a variety of natural elements within the shallow space of a box.
Each student created a miniature world within a box, assembling an intriguing composition. They learned to pay attention to balance, variation, repetition and unity. The boxes will remain on display in the 89th Street lobby showcase until December 5, 2014.
