Chinese Lunar New Year Celebration

The Dalton community welcomed the Year of Sheep/Goat with a fun-filled Chinese Lunar New Year celebration. The event was hosted by the Confucius Classroom and Mandarin program at Dalton.
The evening’s program started with a Chinese Character Bee hosted by Ms. Roxanne Feldman. The contestants tried to match Chinese Characters with their English translation. Dalton student Alec Chen ’21, winner of the formal annual Chinese Character Bee last December, served as the student judge. Latin teacher, Ms. DeVoe, won the game. Go Ms. DeVoe!

The evening included a choreographed traditional Chinese music and dance performance by two renowned artists Ms. Yi Zhou and Ms. Ling Tang. Ms. Zhou, a Pipa (aka Chinese flute, and ancient instrument that has been played for almost 2,000 years) virtuoso praised by the Washington Post for her “breathtaking” meticulous technique and expressiveness, played several pieces including the “Song of Beauty” from the movie “House of Flying Daggers” and Spring Snow. Ms. Tang performed several different styles of Chinese traditional, ethnic and modern dances. Students and family members participated in a traditional Chinese red ribbon dance.
The evening ended with a variety of activities including Ping Pong and Chinese Yoyo.

It was a night of culture learning, friendship, and fun.
