Monday, 1/4 – Saturday, 1/9
This week, Dalton sports teams suited up for their first games back from the winter break. On Friday and Saturday, teams faced off against our rival school, Trinity, at Trinity’s homecoming.
BOYS VARSITY BASKETBALL had a 1-2 week. The team began the week with a tough away loss to one of the top teams in the Ivy Preparatory league and state title contender, Collegiate. Starter Max Peponis (’17) was injured in the game and will be out for two weeks. While the absence of Peponis is a big loss, the team was still able to defeat Browning on Friday, but failed to overcome Trinity on Saturday at Trinity’s homecoming.
GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL headed into the new year with yet another undefeated week against Rye Country Day, Masters, and Trinity. Wednesday, the team played the former State Champions at Rye Country Day. With a final score of 46-39, the girls had great fluidity in the half court, showing great ball movement. They also beat their defenders down the court effortlessly on transition plays. Rye Country Day had formerly defeated Dalton GVB in the semi-finals of States last year, but this did not intimidate the team on Wednesday — it in fact fueled their determination, hard work, and hustle to beat the former State Champions. On Friday evening, the team defeated Masters with an outstanding shooting performance by starter Caleigh Ryan (‘18) and an energetic and vibrant home crowd. The team wrapped up the week at Trinity’s Homecoming, grabbing onto a lead early in the first half and securing it throughout the second to end yet another successful week.

WRESTLING continued its undefeated streak this week with two wins over Martin Luther and Trinity. Against Martin Luther, Casey Schneider (’17) defeated his opponent, which was paramount to Dalton’s success. Clay Hamilton (‘17) and Henry Firestone (‘17) also pinned their opponents. Friday’s face off against Trinity proved to be an exciting and intense match. Faulkner Wilson, who was a State Champion last year, defeated his opponent 9-7. Freshman Zach Love got his first win, pinning his opponent in the first period. Lastly, on Saturday the team was up early, traveling to a tournament at Long Island Lutheran.
GIRLS JV BASKETBALL had a victorious week, defeating Trinity on Friday evening 34-28.
BOYS JV BASKETBALL went 0-2 this week, falling to both Collegiate 38-42 and to rival Trinity 48-43. Guard Jared Feldman (’18) led the game against Collegiate with his game-high 13 assists and guard Julian Schlesinger (‘18) led the team with an impressive 14 points against a Trinity home crowd.
VARSITY SQUASH had a successful week. Coming back from break on Tuesday against the Birch Wathen Lenox School, they swept all seven games. Under the leadership of Roland Brewster (‘16) and Madeline Press (‘16), the following day the team once again swept its opponents 7-0, this time defeating Fieldston on their home turf.
This week SWIMMING defeated Friends Seminary on Wednesday but suffered a loss to Trinity on Friday.
