Dalton Tiger Report: 4/18 – 4/21

Riding off of its successes last week, TRACK AND FIELD had yet another stellar week at the Ivy League Meet at Poly Prep on Tuesday.
In shot put, Grace Welle (‘16), Dara Swan (‘17), and Olivia Tanzman (‘16) placed first, second, and third, respectively, while Jake Multer (‘16) threw a personal record of 34 feet. In pole vaulting, Arjun Prasad (‘18) had a notable achievement as he cleared 8’10”. Captain Dylan Fine (’16) had yet another impressive week, finishing the Dream Mile race in the Jesuit Championship on Friday below the 4:30 mark, placing fifth overall.

JV BASEBALL had yet another successful week. Starting off against Horace Mann on Monday, the boys won 17-6, thanks in large part to Dalton’s strong hitting, with ten hits on the day. On Wednesday, Ryan Kotin (‘18)’s five-inning, no earned run pitching performance helped the Tigers surmount Riverdale. Dalton mercied Riverdale in a decisive 12-2 victory.

Despite suffering a 1-5 defeat to Trinity on Wednesday, GOLF made Dalton history this week. At Dalton’s home course, Sunningdale, Ema Schumer (’18) defeated her male opponent by one stroke at the six spot. Schumer is the first female golfer ever to win a match for Dalton.

SOFTBALL mounted to fourth in the Ivy Preparatory League this week, defeating Horace Mann on Monday and trouncing Riverdale on Wednesday. Against Horace Mann, Alex Lehman (‘19) was a threat on both the offensive and defensive ends. She added to Dalton’s lead with big hits while also protecting the plate as catcher, shown when she threw out a runner stealing second to close out the fourth inning. The game concluded with a final, prolific score of 22-17. Coming off this win, Dalton had a decisive 9-2 victory over Riverdale at Van Cortland Park on Wednesday, with a strong sophomore performance. Caleigh Ryan (‘18) had a perfect day at bat, hitting 4-4, and Alison Comite (‘18) baffled Riverdale hitters, striking out ten batters.

It was a busy week for VARSITY BASEBALL. The team started off its week with a pair of in-league losses, falling to both Horace Mann, 4-2, and Riverdale, 14-6. But the Tigers recovered from the tough losses on Thursday against Masters, beating the school by a score of 11-4. Max Peponis (’17) helped cap the week off with the win in his first pitching start of the season. Peponis’s proficiency on the mound was complemented by his teammates’ aggression at the plate. Five different Dalton batters drove in runs, including Dillon Kersh (’16), who hit a triple, his first extra-base hit of the season.

BOYS LACROSSE had a difficult week. The team suffered a 3-7 loss to Horace Mann on Monday and then faced off against Fieldston on Wednesday, losing 12-3.

After a winless first two weeks, GIRLS LACROSSE rebounded strongly this week. Dalton started the week off with an 11-10 victory over Horace Mann on Monday. The winning streak was kept alive the following game against Riverdale. A strong communal effort by the Tigers, with goals scored by seven Dalton players, propelled the team to a 10-6 victory. Unfortunately, the streak was cut short on Thursday, in a 7-8 loss to Long Island Lutheran.

It was not a good week for either of Dalton’s TENNIS teams. Both teams fell to Horace Mann on Monday and Riverdale on Wednesday.
