Dalton Tiger Report: 5/9 - 5/14

A decisive victory for JV Tennis and impressive feats by the Track and Field team lead this week’s highlights in Dalton athletics.
Despite struggles early on in the week, SOFTBALL capped off the week with a 13-9 victory over Horace Mann on Saturday. With an enthralling first six innings that included 10 lead changes, Dalton took the lead at the start of the seventh inning and held on to prevent a winless week. Noteworthy, Grace Jaeger (‘17) had the game of her career, going 3-3 at bat and catching all pop flies in center field.

JV TENNIS had a perfect week, defeating Fieldston on Monday at every spot to tally up a final score of 5-0. At the one spot, Jason Friedman (‘18) extended his winning streak to three through beating his Fieldston counterpart. In doubles, the deadly duo of sophomore twins, Matt and Will Bartlett, triumphed in a 10-7 victory.
TRACK AND FIELD competed in its fifth developmental meet on Tuesday. Notable performances included, for the girls, Dara Swan (’17)’s second place finish in the javelin and third place finish in the discuss as well as Alana Eiland (’17)’s third place tie in the high jump. On the boys’ side, Andrew Gamzon (’16) placed second in the javelin throw while Nathaniel Ostrer (’16), competing in discus, placed third. Elias Oakes (’16) came in second in the 3200 meter and Peter Gardner (’18) ran an impressive 5:05 in the 1600 meter. In a tremendous finish that came close to beating a school-wide record, Captain Dylan Fine (’16) ran the 800 meter race in 2:02. Next week, the team looks forward to the Ivy and NYSAIS Championships, on Tuesday and Sunday, respectively. Come cheer the team on!

JV BASEBALL had one game this week: a win against Fieldston. Bo Peponis (‘19) went 4-4 on the day, while Devin Milberg (‘19) closed out the pitching performance in strong fashion with a perfect two innings. Although the Tigers planned to take on Horace Mann on Friday, the game was canceled. Fans can look forward to a busy next week, which is sure to be an exciting one, with games for the boys scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.

VARSITY BASEBALL had a difficult week, losing two games to fall to 4-9 in Ivy League play. Fieldston beat the Tigers 4-0 on Wednesday, and Horace Mann got the 3-1 win over Dalton on Friday. Starting pitchers Cortland Perry (’16) and Julian Schlesinger (’18) each pitched solid games, but Dalton’s hitters couldn’t pick up the slack, plating just one run this week, a run scored by Miles Peponis (’18). The team will look to end league play on a high note on Monday versus the third-place Riverdale Falcons.

Congratulations to Elijah Henderson (‘19) of GOLF for winning his match against Masters on Tuesday. Elijah was the only Dalton golfer to win a match this week, albeit his win was the result of a forfeit.

Starting off in competitive fashion against Fieldston on Wednesday, BOYS LACROSSE lost by one goal in an overtime heartbreaker. Coming back against Horace Mann on Friday, the boys were successful in an 8-5 effort.

GIRLS LACROSSE lost both of its games this week to two formidable opponents, Fieldston and Horace Mann. On Wednesday, the team lost in a close, high-scoring game by a final score of 15-11. The team hoped to rebound Saturday with a win against Fieldston, but to no avail, as the Tigers lost 5-7. Looking ahead to next week, Dalton faces off against Riverdale on Monday and Masters on Wednesday. If the team can capitalize on these two games, it might still be in contention to make the playoffs.

By defeating his Hackley counterpart at the three spot, Simon Heinberg of VARSITY TENNIS deterred the team from going winless in matches this week. Despite Heinberg’s efforts, Dalton still fell to Hackley, by a score of 1-4. On Friday, due to bad weather, the team’s match against Poly Prep was rescheduled. Dalton will play Poly this upcoming Tuesday.
