Dalton Student Helps Develop Mobile App to Solve Community Problems

With her app designed to connect farmers and restaurant owners, Dalton’s Priya Mittal'18 and her New Dork team, launched "GroGreen", an iOS application that attempts to keep billions of imperfect produce from simply being thrown away because it is not "pretty enough" to sell. Simply put, they want to turn "wasted food into wanted food!” "GroGreen" won second place at Technovation World Pitch Summit 2016. Technovation has grown to a global competition with more than 10,000 participants from 78 countries, making Priya’s 's second place win truly remarkable and unique.
Technovation is a global technology entrepreneurship program for girls, which is run by Iridescent - a non-profit organization committed to promoting STEM. The goal of the program is to think of a problem in your community, do research, and then design, build and launch a mobile app that provides a solution to the real world problem.

This year, Technovation received thousands of submissions from girls all around the world. The submissions were reviewed by 88 regional centers; the first cut involved an in-person presentation in New York City. New Dork Team was the winner from the NY State region. The winning application from each of these regional centers was then re-reviewed by another panel of judges. Earlier this year, the team was notified that they were one of 6 High School teams from across the world to be selected for the finals. They were privileged to compete with the other teams, which came from Mexico, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Texas, and California, at the 2016 Technovation World Summit in San Francisco.

After their presentation, they were encouraged to formally launch the app as soon as possible by venture capital firms as well as Silicon Valley's leading technology firms like Facebook, Twitter, Google, Intuit, and Dropbox.

We hope they make this a reality in the very near future.
