Dalton’s Varsity Squash team is off to a scorching start, winning its first three matches of the season. In the first two victories, which came against Leman, a preparatory school located in downtown Manhattan, and Browning, Dalton swept both of the 7 “official” match games. The team won its most recent match on Friday, December 9 against Horace Mann, which is always a tough opponent. This victory marked the first time Dalton’s squash team has ever beaten Horace Mann in league play.
Coach Dave Bradford had to deal with the absence of two upperclassmen leaders, co-captain Josie Shapiro ‘17 and Oliver Fisher ‘18, during Friday’s match, certainly shifting the landscape of the ladder.
Playing Horace Mann, Ben Goldstein ‘18, Varsity eighth-grader Auggie Bhavsar ‘21, and co-captain Reggie Brewster ‘17 recorded the first three wins of the match for Dalton, with each player winning his or her match in three consecutive games of five. Jason Friedman ‘18’s match was of intrigue, as he battled hard for all five games but lost his last game 9-11.
With the overall match score tied 3-3, Daelum Mawji ‘18, the #2 ranked under-17 squash player in the country, stepped onto the court with the chance to secure the win for Dalton. Mawji beat his Horace ann opponent in three out of four games, by the final score of 14-12, 11-8, 3-11, and 11-4, to win it for Dalton. Mawji said, “It was a very scrappy match and I didn’t play well at all but we managed to pull out the win anyways.”
