Third Grade-Level Trip to Waterloo Village

The third grade made the trek to Waterloo Village, where we spent the day learning about the Lenape Native Americans and the region they once called home. We were lucky to have decent weather, and were happy to spend the majority of the trip outside interacting with the learning stations and wonderful Waterloo staff.
Our first stop was at a longhouse, where we learned about the dwelling structure and interior organization. In the longhouse we also talked about familial structure and the Turtle, Turkey and Wolf communities within the Lenape. From there we walked to another station depicting a shaman, and here we learned about natural medicine and the native spirit world. We stopped at stations where we learned about cooking, hunting and building; we especially liked the station where we could target practice with corn cobs and wooden hoops! We also saw a model of an archeological dig and found many similarities between the dig site at Waterloo and our own dig from Social Studies class. Finally, we stopped by stations where we learned about clay-making, farming and how young families divvied up work.

Some of us were lucky enough to see the fox that hangs around the area on the hike back! We’re very excited to continue our study of the Lenape.
