Dalton Chess Players Conquer World Youth Chess Championship in Greece

Recently, a group of talented chess players from Dalton, including 4th graders Gus Huston, Julia Miyasaka, Veda Safranek, Nate Shuman, and 2nd grader William Safranek, returned from competing in the World Youth Chess Championship in Halkidiki, Greece. The event drew almost 1600 of the top youth chess players in the world from approximately 100 countries.
Over the course of the eleven days of the most competitive scholastic chess tournament in the world, playing games that lasted sometimes over five hours, our students delivered impressive results, each finishing with a majority of points available. The 130 member USA delegation ranged in age between 7 and 18 years, and Dalton was the only school in the country represented by 5 students.  Both on and off the board, it was a fantastic opportunity to interact on the global stage with students from diverse countries and backgrounds.  Congratulations to Gus, Julia, Veda, Nate and William for their outstanding performances as they represented Team USA and The Dalton School!
