Prima Ballerina Misty Copeland Reads Firebird Book to FP
Imagine beginning your week by meeting the first African American Female Principal Dancer with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre and a renowned author.
Misty Copeland bedazzled the First Program community on Monday, February 1. All listened as she read aloud her award winning and first children's book Firebird. The First Program librarians sold approximately 200 Firebird books before Misty's visit.
Misty described the importance of believing in yourself and striving to do your best through hard work and dedication. To prepare for featured performances in many roles, including the Firebird, she said she practices most days for seven hours and described how she feels performing in front of an audience. She admitted that her favorite role was Juliet in “Romeo and Juliet” and of course, the Swan in “Swan Lake.” Ms. Copeland autographed bookplates and posed for pictures with many FP admirers.
Misty has become a role model for children and adults. Her passion is giving back, especially by mentoring children. Among many honors, she has worked with many charitable organizations and was inducted into the Boys & Girls Club National Hall of Fame.
