Little Dalton Post Office - House 46 - You've Got Mail

House 46 will close the 2016 Little Dalton Post Office on February 29. The House 46 postal workers worked hard and efficiently to make sure that their customers were satisfied. Each day they picked up the mail, counted, date stamped and canceled mail using a "Dalton Mail" stamp. Next, they sorted all the mail and placed it into mail carrier bags for delivery. H46 managed stamp, postcard and envelope sales, too, selling each item for 10 cents and creating new supplies as needed. House 46 has decided that all proceeds will benefit the Wildlife Conservation Society.
In conjunction with running the Little Dalton Post Office, House 46ers studied letter writing. First, the children discussed the various purposes of letter writing. For example, there are friendly letters, letters of concern, letters of complaint, letters of appreciation, letters of inquiry, congratulatory letters, holiday letters, etc. Then the children learned about the various parts of a letter - the heading, salutation, body, closing, signature and post script. They also learned how to address an envelope. House 46ers put this knowledge to practical use by writing letters that they sent through the Little Dalton Post Office. House 46ers wrote letters to their kindergarten teachers, other faculty members and friends.

House 46ers used letter writing to effect change by writing letters of concern. Each student thought of an issue that is troubling and composed a letter to President Obama or Mayor de Blasio. They began by writing a draft. Their final copy stated their concern and a proposed solution. Letter topics include global warming, homelessness, food insecurity, clean water, providing jobs for the unemployed, smoking, protecting the environment and endangered animals. The children addressed their envelopes and mailed their letters in mailboxes near their homes.

House 46ers thank everyone for supporting this wonderful community service learning project.
