Monday’s game against Spence demonstrated the team’s great potential, with plays made aplenty on both the offensive and defensive ends for the Tigers. Smart base running by Ashley Lewis (‘18) and a great game at the mound for Alison Comite (‘18), who pitched a shutout, propelled Dalton to a 12-0 win over Spence. On Wednesday, the team lost to Poly Prep, and on Friday it was defeated by Fieldston, the reigning Ivy League Champs.
On Monday, VARSITY BASEBALL triumphed over Collegiate in a 4-2 win. Captain Cortland Perry (’16) pitched all seven innings, giving up only two hits and striking out nine batters. A 3-run first inning was all Dalton would need to overcome the Dutchmen. The team’s next two games came against Poly Prep and Fieldston, two teams which are currently tied for first place in the Ivy Prep League. Dalton fell 1-11 to Poly on Wednesday, and lost 2-3 against Fieldston, despite an early 1-0 lead. Dalton now stands at fifth place in the league with a 2-3 record at week’s end.
TRACK AND FIELD showcased its skill this week at two important meets. On Wednesday, the team made the trek to Hackley to compete against athletes from the hosting school as well as others. Captain Dylan Fine (’16), renowned during his four years on the team for his unmatched speed, ran the 1600 meter, 3200 meter, and 800 meter races, placing highly in all three events. Notably, track-newbie Hadley Benjamin (‘19) led the Dalton girls in the two mile race. On Friday, certain members of the team participated in another interschool meet at Icahn Stadium. A distinct MVP at this meet, Fine once again lived up to his hype and finished a two mile race in 9:48, coming in 3rd in his heat.
An achievement of the team that went unrecorded last week includes that Peter Gardner (‘18) set a new record for Dalton Track, running a dry steeplechase in 11:58 at the team’s second special meet. Congrats Peter, and sorry for the delayed shoutout!
GOLF lost both of its matches this week. On Wednesday, the team played Fieldston at Fieldston’s home course, Century Country Club. The following day, Dalton played a tri-match against Hackley and Collegiate at Sunningdale, Dalton’s home course. Following Dalton’s bus running out of gas on the way to the match, the team seemed to follow suit, losing to both of its competitors. Yet, there’s a silver lining: at the one spot, Michael Gormley (‘18) defeated his Fieldston counterpart, a scratch golfer, as well as his Collegiate opponent the following day. He impressively shot a 43, eight over par, at Century and a 40, four over par, at Sunningdale.
JV BASEBALL had a strong week. Starting off against Collegiate, the boys rallied back from an early deficit to win 7-6, with Koby Bernstein (‘19) closing out the game on the mound. On Wednesday, Dalton faced the formidable Poly Prep team. With a seventh inning rally, the team brought it within four but was unable to win, losing 11-7. On Friday, Dalton defeated Fieldston with a strong team outing. Bo Peponis (‘19) pitched a complete game with one earned run and Emilio Vicioso (‘19) had three RBIs.
GIRLS LACROSSE kept the fans at the edge of their seats this week. Although the team lost to Poly Prep by seven goals on Monday, senior Ella Tessler-Lavigne (‘16) scored a prolific four goals in the game, particularly exciting as it fell on her eighteenth birthday. On Friday, Dalton was defeated by Fieldston by one goal in an over-time thriller.
On Monday, BOYS LACROSSE picked up a win in a close game against Columbia Prep, thanks in large part to the stout goalie work of Julien Loo (‘17). Later in the week, the boys fell to Poly Prep and — notably — Fieldston, one of the most talented teams in the city.
JV BOYS TENNIS started the week off well with a 4-1 win over Collegiate. This was the only win the team had this week, losing to Fieldston on Wednesday and Poly Prep on Friday, both by a score of 2-3.
Despite going 0-3, BOYS VARSITY TENNIS made big plays this week to win some matches. On Monday, the senior-freshman power duo of Simon Heinberg (‘16) and Justin Taub (‘19) bested Collegiate, keeping Dalton’s spirits alive by deterring a shutout in this key doubles win. This success could not be repeated on Wednesday, unfortunately, as the Tigers suffered a tough blow to Poly Prep, losing 0-5. On Friday, the team took the courts against Fieldston determined to not go down without a fight. With wins by Justin Kallus (‘17) and Heinberg, his second of the week, Dalton was just short of picking up its first win of the season, losing 2-3.
On the close game, co-captain Jamie Konigsberg looked ahead to the next time Dalton faces Fieldston: “No doubt that we’ll get ‘em next time.”
