Get Ready to Take Your Parent Safety Walk

Dalton's Safety Walk program received some refinements over the summer with a new online self-scheduling system and a new video, written by and featuring Dalton's Security Director Luis Despaigne, former precinct commander for the NYPD. All parents K-11 are asked to walk the school's two routes every year. According to Mr. Despaigne, the Safety Walk is "proactive and successful in providing a safe corridor for Dalton's community members.
The new scheduling system, connected to the Safety Walk page under Resources on the private website, allows parents to self-schedule a walking date using the Schedule Your Safety Walk link. When it's time to open the scheduler for a particular grade, PA Safety Walk co-chairs Sandy Mancini and Janette Lieu will email parents, to let them know the schedule is ready to go. Parents may then go in and select one of the four slots per day during the designated walking dates.

According to the school's custom, parents walk according to their youngest child's grade which is displayed for a limited time on the scheduler. There are all sorts of bells and whistles with cancellations and changes (also limited), reminders and calendar connections to help parents remember when they booked their slot. A schedule showing when grades are expected walk is also provided on the page to help parents plan ahead.

Credit for these improvements goes to Ms. Mancini and Ms. Lieu, supported by the leadership of PA President LaMae DeJongh. Together, they collaborated with Dalton's Communications and Security Offices over the summer to select the scheduling software and to provide input on the Safety Walk Video, produced by the Communications Office.

The video, featuring Mr. Despaigne and other familiar Dalton employee acting talents, is designed to lead parents who are unfamiliar through walk procedures, to help them learn what to expect and what is expected of them.

We want to thank our parents in advance for scheduling their walk and arriving on time, dawning their day-glow vests, learning to use the security walkie-talkies and finally, for providing this most effective means of keeping our children safe.
