Rosetta Lee Helps Cultivate an Inclusive Middle School Community

Diversity speaker and trainer Rosetta Lee visited the Dalton Middle School and engaged over two days around topics of identity, conflict and bullying, and cultivating an inclusive community. Aligned with the school's goal to examine and forward programs which foster empathy, Ms. Lee worked across grades 4-8, as well as with faculty and parents, sharing research-based theoretical models as well as practical tools.
Using an inquiry-based method, asking students to discuss and report, Ms Lee solicited her student audiences to share anecdotes about microaggressions, or bullying. Below is a list of the questions she addressed.
  • What is the difference between everyday conflict and bullying?
  • What are the various ways we express aggression in unhealthy ways?
  • How do friendships evolve over time?
  • Why is middle school so dramatic for so many?
  • What can you do to have healthy relationships during this time of your life?
  • What is the difference between everyday conflict and bullying?
  • How do boys and girls experience aggression differently?
  • How do identifiers like sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, ability, and socioeconomic status affect aggression?
  • How do we learn about our various group identities like female, African American, Buddhist, homosexual, middle class, etc.?
  • From whom do we learn the meaning of these terms?
  • What messages have we internalized about ourselves and others?
  • What are the differences that result in one person having a healthy self-identity and another person experiencing own-group shame and hatred?
  • How are bullying and bias-related?
  • How do every day put downs have roots in the oppression of groups of people?
