Dalton Tiger Report: 1/4 - 1/6

In an exciting week for Girls JV Basketball, the team faced off against fellow league leader Poly Prep and played at rival Trinity's Homecoming game.

Going into Winter Break, Girls JV Basketball boasted an undefeated record.

On January 4, the Tigers stepped onto the court to protect that record against Poly Prep, a formidable opponent. The game started out at a fast pace, with both teams scoring layups off of multiple fast breaks. As the game progressed, the score remained tight, staying within a two to four point range throughout the second and third quarters. Gabby Mayer '20 and Toni DaCosta '20 led the scoring, both getting multiple layups and short jump shots inside three-point range.

Dalton led by a few points going into the fourth quarter. Poly Prep then went on a brief scoring run to close in on Dalton’s lead, trailing only by one point. With less than two minutes left on the clock, tension mounted. Poly Prep scored, putting Dalton behind by two points with less than a minute to play.

At this point, Dalton’s offense became chaotic and sloppy; the pace turned from fast to frantic. But the Tigers found momentum in a technical foul called against the Poly Prep coach, which put DaCosta at the free throw line for two shots. DaCosta hit one of the two free throws, putting Dalton in winning position if the team was able to get a shot. With ten seconds left on the clock, the Tigers called a timeout and drew up a play to get a wide open layup if available, or if not, a jump shot. While executing the play, Poly Prep got a steal, but a quick deflection from Dalton forced the Poly Prep players to set up an inbounds play.

With four seconds left, the Dalton players had to quickly foul Poly Prep to put themselves in position for a game winning shot. A Poly Prep player made one out of two foul shots, putting Poly Prep ahead by two points, 39-37. On Dalton’s next possession, with .4 seconds remaining on the game clock, Mayer threw the ball into the paint from half court, but no Tigers were able to tip the ball into the hoop. The JV Girls had lost their first game of the season.

On Friday, January 6, Girls JV Basketball played at Trinity Homecoming, always a loud, vibrant atmosphere. With the bitter loss versus Poly Prep on their minds, Dalton players wanted to redeem themselves. When the Dalton players stepped onto the court, Dalton was booed ferociously by the Trinity crowd. But the Dalton Boys JV Basketball team provided a cheering section for Dalton, visibly increasing the amount of energy on the Dalton team. With the intense atmosphere always promised of a Homecoming game, Dalton rose to the occasion, clobbering Trinity by a score of 40-10.
