Dalton Chess Tigers Take Charge at NYS Championships
The Dalton Chess Team delivered yet more proof that Tigers play chess this past weekend (March 11-12, 2017) at the New York State Scholastic Chess Championships in Saratoga Springs, NY. Dalton's Primary Team (3rd grade and below) and Elementary Team (6th grade and below) each came in first place, while our K-1 Team placed third and our High School Team came in fourth.
First grader Reese Rutkoske '28 is first grade co-state champion, and Hamilton Shillingford '23 is the Elementary State Champion, winning all six of his games. The K-1 team only had three players, and the top four scores count, so we spotted everyone else a full point in every round (it's a six round tournament), so their third place is especially impressive. In high school, Dalton engaged in a three-way tie for first going into the last round, but had a last round fade to take fourth. We scared them this time. Next year we take them.
