Dalton Varsity Softball faced off against its rival Trinity in its season opener on Wednesday, April 5. Coming off of an intense, five-day preseason in Tampa Bay, Florida, where Dalton went 1-2 in play, the team was determined to grab an early victory to jump start a successful season.
The game was a rout, with Dalton mercying Trinity 13-2. Dalton’s consistent and disciplined defense enervated Trinity’s offense. Starting pitcher Allison Comite '18 pitched solid strikes throughout the game, and in the case that Trinity made contact, Dalton players in the field stepped up to make clean outs.
On the offensive end, players were consistently walked due to Trinity’s wild pitching—a combination of pitches far outside the plate and on several occasions actually hitting Dalton players—which earned Dalton easy runs in the early innings.
Coming off an effortless victory, Dalton faced a much more formidable opponent on Friday in Poly Prep, a perennial powerhouse in the Ivy Preparatory League. Dalton struggled to get hits because of fast pitching from Poly’s pitcher. Having great difficulty getting on base throughout the game, Dalton was not able to get up more than two runs. Poly was able to consistently hit the ball, and the absence of several Dalton players due to various commitments created a void on the field that in part allowed Poly to gain 12 runs. Dalton was mercied 12-2.
Girls Varsity Softball is slated to play Trevor Day on Monday, April 17 at Randall’s Island.
