In the final few days of the spring season, Softball and Boys Lacrosse competed in the NYSAIS Playoffs, while Varsity Baseball hit a walk-off home run in its second-to-last game.
With the school year in its last weeks, spring sports teams too find themselves in the home stretch. While the majority of Dalton sports teams concluded their seasons at the beginning of this week, two teams, Softball and Boys Lacrosse, extended their seasons, having qualified for the NYSAIS Playoffs.
Softball, at the No. 8 seed, dominated the No. 9 seed Packer Collegiate 10-0 on Friday at Randall’s Island, Field #28, before losing to No. 1 Fieldston 5-0 at Fieldston in the tournament's second round on Saturday.
Boys Lacrosse, seeded at No. 8 in the NYSAIS Playoffs, lost 11-5 in a matchup against No. 1 Rye Country Day on Saturday at Rye.
Among the teams whose seasons came to a close this week was Varsity Baseball, which, despite having a nucleus of talented players, struggled to find success on the diamond this season.
Varsity Baseball Closes Out Season
By Bo Peponis
The Varsity Baseball team had an up-and-down season this year. Coming into the season, the boys understood that the team would rely largely upon first and second year players on the team; six sophomores and six juniors were on the roster.
In the first half of the season, the team struggled to string together hitting rallies to support the team’s strong pitching performances. Towards the middle stretch of the season, the team’s bats started to pick up, but only as Dalton’s pitchers struggled with consistency and throwing strikes.
The team’s four wins came against Masters, Long Island Lutheran, Riverdale, and Horace Mann. The highlight of the season occurred in the second-to-last game when starting catcher Jasper Taback ‘18 hit a walk-off home run in extra innings to defeat Horace Mann.
By the end of the season, the team was starting up to five sophomores, two juniors, and two seniors. Leading the team in average were Miles Peponis ‘18 and Koby Bernstein ‘19, both of whom batted above .300.
While the team did not make the NYSAIS playoffs this year, the future looks promising. The team loses only two of its nine starters (outfielders Oliver Glavin '17 and Max Peponis '17), and returns its top four pitchers and four of its top five infielders.
The key aspects that will determine the success of the team next year will be getting bat production throughout the lineup and consistency from the pitching staff. If the team can find success in these two areas, the Varsity Baseball team can position itself well in the Ivy Preparatory League next year.
