On Wednesday, September 27, Girls Varsity Tennis grabbed its first victory of the season against Fieldston.
Last year, the team went 2-0 against Fieldston. This year, both teams were looking to take control of the series and improve their ranking in the Ivy Prepatory League.
Although Dalton lost first singles and second doubles by only tight margins, the team won three other matches to secure the win. Playing first doubles, co-captains Caleigh Ryan (‘18) and Nadja Umlauf (‘18) grabbed an easy victory for the Tigers, winning 6-1, 6-1. Second singles and third singles were both tight matches. Phoebe Cahill (‘20), playing second singles, had an easy first set victory, winning 6-2. However, Cahill quickly fell behind by 1-4 in the second set. After fighting back for multiple games, the score was tied at 6-6 and went into a tie breaker, which proved to be a comfortable win for Dalton with a score of 7-1.
Kate Kaplin (‘19) proved to be the linchpin in Dalton’s victory. At third singles, Kaplin came back after losing the first set to win the second two sets. This was the final, deciding match that propelled Dalton to its first victory of the season, defeating Fieldston 3-2 in matches.
