House 45 and Grade 9 Bio Students Lab to Dissect Starfish

It's fantastic when First Program and High School students can join together for a Lab. That's just what happened on November 14, 2017 as students from House 45 and their teachers House Advisor Lindsey Harriss and Associate Jessica Barton arrived at 89th Street to Science Chair Lisa Brizzolara's biology lab/classroom. Their mission - to dissect starfish under the guidance of a section of Grade 9 Biology students.
Donning oversized gloves to protect their skin from the liquid used to preserve the specimens, and working in small groups, the students followed Ms. Brizzolara's instructions to examine and dissect their starfish specimens. Suffering at first through some expected ughs, oohs, and yucks, the inquisitive 3rd graders held fast and focused on the science, studying the unique features of this seemingly docile sea creature that has survived from prehistoric times. The teams were surprised to learn about the starfish's ability to eject and regenerate its limbs, and how it projects its mouth deep inside of clams, like a straw, to devour its favorite delicacy from the inside out.
