Dalton Wrestling Starts the Season Off Strong

The Dalton Wrestling team is off to an auspicious start, currently in second place in the Ivy Preparatory League. The team is bolstered by veteran leadership in its captains Jonah Ryan (‘18), Willie Swett (‘18), and Garrett Basso (‘18). This year, the team also welcomed four newcomers.

On Saturday, December 9, the Tigers participated in the Wingate Wrestling Tournament at the George W. Wingate School in Brooklyn. At the tournament, Dalton’s performance was highlighted by Elie Farah (‘19) and Jake Intrater (‘19), who won the 195 and 113 weight classes, respectively, wrestling undefeated. Additionally, Aidan Shepardson (‘19) had a standout performance in the 170 pound weight class, going 4-1 and coming in fifth place. Lastly, Jeremy Yarden (‘20) came in second place in the 132 weight class.

This past Monday, Dalton defeated Collegiate 48-27. Ryan proved to be the linchpin in the win, fighting a tough match that ended in a pinfall victory.

Earlier this season, Dalton competed in the Lexington Holiday Invitational, in which every Dalton wrestler claimed a top three finish in their respective weight classes.

On Wednesday, the Tigers faced off against Poly Prep, defeating Poly 58-17. Ryan once again won through a pin, while Intrater won due to a technical fall. While the Tigers lost, the team showed toughness against Poly Prep, whose team is comprised of regionally ranked wrestlers who are prospective college recruits.

Farah spoke on the Dalton team’s determination: “wrestling is naturally a very demanding sport and it’s been great to see how determined everyone has approached practices, and its shown in our strong finishes in tournaments and duals.”
