Second Grade Students Learn About the Apollo Theater From Dalton Parent Keisha Sutton-James

Keisha Sutton-James, Dalton Parent, and Percy Sutton's granddaughter spoke to the entire 2nd Grade at First Program about the Apollo Theater. As part of our landmark and neighborhood study, Keisha discussed the history of the Apollo Theater and its importance to Harlem during the early 1900s and the Harlem Renaissance.

Students learned how Keisha and her grandfather renovated and brought the Apollo Theater back to life. Percy Sutton petitioned for the Apollo Theater to become an official NYC landmark in 1983. Students listened and watched performances by music legends such as Patti LaBelle, Diana Ross, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder and the Temptations! The entire 2nd Grade visited the Apollo Theater.
