High School Juniors Confront World Refugee/Resettlement Crises for HS History Day

High School History Day affords Dalton history students an opportunity to step out of the routine and engage in a variety of projects and experiences.  This year, eleventh-grade students worked with members of the IRC (the International Rescue Committee) to learn more about refugee crises and resettlement efforts in various parts of the world.
IRC members and Dalton parents, Andra Ehrenkranz and Vicki Foley first offered background information on the mission of the IRC and helped frame our understanding and analysis of refugee migration challenges in the 21st century.  The presentation provided essential information for students as they then attended one of seven breakout sessions examining refugee and resettlement issues in Syria, Serbia, Myanmar, Uganda, and the United States.  These sessions were co-facilitated by Dalton history faculty and members of the IRC (along with Ms. Ehrenkranz and Ms. Foley, Alexis Abrahams, Kim Yellin, Charlie Grosso, Rubyn Wasserman, and Sarah O'Hagan participated). Students engaged in meaningful conversation about the systemic factors leading to current refugee crises and explored the obligations of a participatory citizenry in addressing these crises.  Videos and additional photos of the keynote presentation and breakout sessions can be found below.
