Celebrating Dalton’s History at the Centennial Crawl & Scavenger Hunt

Last week’s Centennial Crawl & Scavenger Hunt celebration brightened up a wintry February night, with about 300 people braving the cold.
Beginning at the First Program’s East Lobby, Head of School Jim Best, First Program Director Nora Elish, and Curator Stephanie Fins welcomed guests who checked out the Centennial Tiles. The tiles, created by community members of all ages, blankets every surface – the walls, ceiling, and floor – for an immersive experience.

Then, with hot cider in hand, the crowd headed to 89th Street to enjoy refreshments and continue to explore additional Centennial Exhibits including the “A History of Dalton in 101 Objects” in the lobby, the Alumni Staircase, and the History Milestone staircase.

A Scavenger Hunt, created by Watson Adventures, proved to be the ideal way to explore Dalton’s Centennial exhibits. Attendees eagerly scoured the lobby and staircase exhibits seeking answers to clues accessed on their cell phones. Most paused in their hunt to explore the stunning new Science floors on 11 and 12 and to pepper the high school student “docents” with questions about the new facility and their classes.

In his remarks, Head of School Jim Best said, “This year, I’ve been exploring the idea of community and belonging….On nights like this, I feel especially proud to belong to this community.” Curator Stephanie Fins said, “I envisioned a cultural history of Dalton using objects to connect us to ideas and people. Our telling of Dalton history would capture the voices of the community and highlight significant milestones in an exhibit and website.”

If you missed this community-wide party, the Centennial exhibits can be viewed digitally at www.dalton100.org.
