Documentary Film Producer Xan Parker Visits Dalton
As an Academy Award-nominated producer, Ms. Parker explains that all documentaries are really about people.
In her presentation to Dalton high school students, Ms. Parker used examples of her own work and professional experiences to explain how documentaries can be used as an art form to create emotional connections with audiences, as well as a tool to communicate important social issues.
Ms. Parker shared that, for her, the most exciting aspect of documentary filmmaking is the opportunity to take a specific topic and expand it to tell a larger narrative. One example that she gave was in her most recent film, Tigerland, which chronicles tiger preservation efforts in India and Russia. While the film is largely focused around the conservationists trying to protect these animals, the film also offers a chance to show how the geopolitical forces that affect people across the world, such as the colonization of India or global deforestation, also affects animals.
The Dalton community would like to thank Ms. Parker for her visit, her industry insights, and of course her ongoing efforts in highlighting the stories worth telling.
