Head of School Jim Best warmly welcomed faculty and staff at the annual opening meeting in the Martin Theater this week. He began by honoring our Facilities staff who "have been the true foundation -- essential, unshakeable, unbreakable -- of this construction project." The audience responded with an enthusiastic standing ovation acknowledging this hardworking group who, as Jim noted: "Day in, day out, have kept us running."
He shared three school-wide priorities:
Excellence & Innovation - Dalton must be a national resource for excellence in education, and for innovation in teaching and learning
Equity & Inclusion - Dalton must be a community where every member is needed, known, and valued
Health & Wellness - Dalton must be a school that nourishes its people and recognizes that our intellectual health is connected to our emotional, physical, and social health
Jim explained that these priorities help to give shape to both Dalton's Strategic Plan and the Campaign and also helps to clarify our thinking and our actions going forward.
Jim also introduced this year's schoolwide theme: "Serving." He said that Serving is a daily practice and is the work of belonging to a community; Serving is relationship and is taking responsibility for the substance and character of our relationships; Serving is learning -- an active form of empathy and the heart of intellectual, emotional, and social development; Serving is a way of being -- a mindset; and Serving is essential to Dalton and calls on every student to develop "a sense of responsibility toward others both within the School and in the community at large."
He concluded that we'll find ways to explore Serving throughout the year in "this 101-year-old experiment in progressive education and community building."
