History Teacher Named Board Member of the Association for Jewish Studies
The Association for Jewish Studies nominated History Teacher Shira Kohn, PhD to its Board of Directors. Serving a four-year term, Dr. Kohn is one of the first members inducted into the Board who works outside an institution of higher education.
The Association for Jewish Studies is a learned society and professional organization devoted to advancing research in Jewish Studies at higher education institutions. In her role, Dr. Kohn will work alongside other committee members to further the Association’s strategic initiatives and foster a greater understanding of Jewish Studies among the wider public.
In addition to her role at Dalton, Dr. Kohn has published many texts on American Jewish history and culture, including “Turning German Jews into Jewish Greeks: Philanthropy and Acculturation in the Jewish Greek System’s Student Refugee Programs, 1936-1940.” Most recently, the Association for Jewish Studies published Dr. Kohn’s article, "Just Like Everybody Else: Jewish College Sororities and Acculturation in Mid-Twentieth-Century America," which uses college yearbooks to examine issues of gender, bodies, and self-representation by Jewish women in the immediate postwar decades.
