MS Robotics Club Competes in Its First Competition

The Dalton Middle School Robotics Club teams traveled to Poughkeepsie for a VEX Robotics Competition tournament on December 14. The teams, Turing Test and Analytical Engine, were two of the few middle school teams competing alongside mostly high school teams.
In this year’s game, robots can score points by stacking cubes in a goal zone or placing cubes in towers to multiply the value of stacked cubes. All teams played six rounds of qualification matches with randomly assigned alliance partners, followed by an elimination bracket style playoffs. Rankings were determined by the qualifications matches, and the top ranked teams pick their partners for elimination.

Turing Test designed a robot that could pick up three blocks at a time, stack them internally, and deliver the entire stack to the scoring zone. Their consistent autonomous code and quick intake earned them 9th place after qualifications, and they were selected for the 6th seeded alliance. Analytical Engine chose to focus on placing the multiplier cubes with a long arm that could reach all but the tallest tower. Their extensive troubleshooting ahead of time and strategic driving with alliance partners earned them 6th place after qualifications and a spot on the 4th seeded alliance.

Congratulations on a fantastic season opener to both teams, and best of luck at the Queens tournament in February!
