In Dalton’s inaugural College Case Studies program, Junior families joined 17 College Admissions Deans from across the country to better understand how applicants are evaluated during the college admissions process.
At the event, Dalton’s College Office assigned parents and students to different classrooms where they were paired with a visiting Admissions Dean (initially, the deans did not share their school affiliations). Each group was tasked with the same challenge -- as a mock admissions committee for a fictitious institution, Kirkland College, to evaluate four student applications.
After reviewing a brief about Kirkland College and reading the four students’ applications, each mock admissions committee was challenged to select only one of the four applicants to attend Kirkland based on their academic profile, extracurricular activities, standardized test scores, student essays, Kirkland’s institutional priorities, and many other determining factors. While the activity gave parents and students a hands-on review of the college process, it also provided important insight into how real-world admission committees evaluate applicants.
After the committees debated their selection, parents and students reconvened in the Martin Theater to go over the group decisions as Admissions Deans revealed which school they worked for, including Gettysburg College, University of Virginia, Middlebury College, Rice University, USC, Columbia University, and others. After a thoughtful Q&A session with the Deans, the College Office welcomed families to join them for dinner on the 14th floor to eat, debrief, and enjoy one another’s company after an information-packed night.
Thank you to Dalton’s College Office and our visiting Admissions Deans for a wonderful event!
