Dalton Families Celebrate Black History and Culture at The Block Party
Dalton families, students, faculty and staff came together on Friday, February 21, to celebrate Black history and culture at The Block Party, sponsored by the DEI Office and POCOC.
Colorful red, black, yellow and green decorations and the aroma of authentic Ghanian and traditional comfort foods filled the air in Dalton's cafeteria. During the evening, guests heard a panel of students talk about their experiences on the recent DGI Ghana trip, learned a Step dance taught by our very own Mr. Bertrand, and had a chance to win raffle prizes, including a copy of Firebird by Misty Copeland and a Black Panther-themed Monopoly set.
In addition to these fun activities, students of all ages enjoyed dancing and playing games together while parents and teachers had an opportunity to connect. One parent summed up the general mood by saying, "This should happen again in the spring!"
At its core, "Black History Month is an annual celebration of African American achievements and a time for recognizing the central role of blacks in U.S. history." (History.com) The Block Party was a wonderful way for our community to honor Black and African American culture. A special thanks to the MS Dimensions and the HS WoC and MoC club members for their assistance throughout the event.
