Dalton Student Delegation Attends World Wildlife Day at the U.N.

Members of Dalton’s MS Sustainability Club and HS Wildlife Club joined over 100 other students at the United Nations to hear speakers from around the world discuss global wildlife and sustainability efforts.
On World Wildlife Day, delegates from India, Costa Rica, Germany, the European Union, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and other community-based conservation organizations presented at the United Nations. They shared ways that governments can protect wildlife populations by working with local communities and inspiring young people to become involved.

As the delegates spoke, Dalton students listened intently to many alarming statistics currently affecting our world’s biodiversity. “I liked the point that the delegate from India made,” commented Rohan Shah ’25. “He said… ‘we need to figure out how to produce more food without destroying the environment.’ I like that this point was brought up because it talks about how much the food system depends on ruining nature.” During the event, a representative from World Leaders of Today even called on Dalton and other schools in attendance and involved them in an activity to show the interconnectedness of nature and community welfare.

Many of the speakers focused on scientific research that states that the world is on pace to lose one million species in the next decade. To mitigate this biodiversity crisis, the president of the Wildlife Conservation Society established five key transformative actions: 1. Conserve intact forests 2. Expand and strengthen our protected areas to 30% of land and ocean 3. Promote sustainable agriculture 4. All illegal trade of species must be prevented 5. Accelerate transition to sustainable cities.
