French Students Discuss Groundbreaking Novel with Professor in Senegal
In Mr. Bendali's French Nationalism High School class, guest professor Mr. Fallou Gueye, joined the online class from Dakar, Senegal to discuss the novel Les bouts de bois de Dieu by Senegalese author/director Ousmane Sembene.
The topic of the discussion was the role of women throughout the novel. Later, HS students reflected on their experience:
“Professor Gueye was incredibly knowledgeable about the book we were reading and the film we watched. Through his insight, I was able to better understand the themes and symbols that Ousmane Sembene has crafted, particularly in Les Bouts de bois de Dieu.” -Madeline Tirschwell '20
“I really, really enjoyed our classes with Professor Gueye. I think he added some new insights into our understanding of the relationship between French patrons and African culture. I thought he said some really interesting things about the role of women in the liberation movement, and it really made me appreciate the books and movies we've read and watched so far in a whole new way. Thank you for inviting him in! -Lara Yellin '21
“I thought Mr. Gueye’s virtual visit was really nice because we got to hear his insights on the book and hear his explanations in French, which strengthened my understanding skills.” -Beatrix Stewart-Frommer '21
“I really enjoyed having the professor join us. It was nice to have a new perspective added, especially in such a small class. I think it was a great idea and he had great insight to the content we are studying.” - Katia Lawson '20
Mr. Bendali said, "I met Professor Fallou Gueye at a Sub-Saharan francophone literature seminar in the summer of 2018 at the University Anta Diop of Dakar. I attended the seminar as a part of professional development for the Nationalism course I developed as an elective for the World and Classical Language Department." Thanks to Mr. Gueye for taking the time to meet with our French students!
