A Seat at The Table: Student Documentaries On Food Production, Consumption and Justice
HS Students participating in You Are What You Eat: A Critical Investigation into Food Production, Consumption, and Justice (co-taught by Jennifer Stolper Muenz and Kevin Slick), produced documentaries which represent the culmination of an intensive research process and utilize a visual format to deliver insight and raise questions.
The impetus for the topics under investigation can best be characterized by this passage from Food Justice:
Issues of race, ethnicity, class, and gender are at the forefront of a social justice agenda. When viewed through the food justice lens, they are also a key part of how we talk about food. Historically, food groups have struggled to effectively address the contentious issues associated with questions of class, race, ethnicity, and gender…The language of food justice ensures that these core issues are not ignored but rather placed at the center of the discussion regarding how, by whom, and to what ends the food system is transformed. (Gottlieb and Joshi, 2010, p. 229).
We hope you enjoy viewing the accompanying student-made documentaries!
