Third Graders Inspired by Creative Styles of John White

Dalton third graders found inspiration in the stylings of 17th century English colonial governor, explorer, artist, and cartographer John White.
The students painted and created scientific illustrations in the style of White, using clay pigments and indigo to make the paint. Like White, the students crafted illustrations of the flora and fauna of the Jamestown region — the originals intended to attract investors and colonists to the region.

The project is part of the classes' archaeological unit on British colonization in the Jamestown region — revamped this year for a digital platform.

Visiting materials specialist Patricia Miranda collaborated with the Museum Program to lead the virtual sessions for the students.
