High School Science Students Continue Engaging Studies

High School Science students continue to engage in captivating research as they enter the second half of the school year.
In Biology, students investigated why neighborhoods in New York City experience different daytime summer surface temperatures. After studying the properties of water and the biochemistry behind them, they worked to apply their learning in a project. The students used data provided by the city to analyze and explain temperature patterns in different NYC neighborhoods. At the end of their project, they took time to view each other's projects and provide feedback to peers!

After studying biochemistry and properties of molecules, Biology students further explored how biological membranes behave using soap bubbles as a model. The students sought to answer the questions, "Why does ice cream need to be churned and Why do bubbles form?” After studying biochemistry and the properties of molecules, students explored how biological membranes behave using soap bubbles as a model. They then took a trip to the teaching kitchen to make ice cream in a bag to see more biochemistry in action, including emulsion and endothermic processes!

Advanced Biology students recently learned about the relationship between body movement and surrounding resources. In an assignment last month, 11th and 12th graders first assessed the structure of the heart and major vessels using a sheep heart dissection. Next, they explored challenges to the cardiovascular system, including heart disease, heart attacks, and blood clotting. Lastly, the students focused on two congenital heart defects and further explored solutions to these defects and challenges in heart surgery by learning about Vivien Thomas's contributions to heart surgery.
