HS Independent Study on Display in 89th Street Lobby

The 89th Street Lobby features a new, innovative exhibit courtesy of Senior Shravya Pant '22.
Shravya’s exhibit, "On Court, Off Court, and Always On Camera: Women's Tennis and the Media," is a condensed and refashioned version of her History Capstone project.

Using images and videos from mainstream media and an original video (all accessible with subtitles on screen and with audio and video accessible with a QR Code), Shravya explores the media's treatment of women in professional tennis and the longstanding relationship between women's tennis and the press. Her work includes an exploration of the history of the WTA and the struggle by Billie Jean King and the "original nine" to achieve parity with the men's tour, as well as sections on "Race, Ethnicity, and Nationality," "Sexualization, Commodification, and Feminine Representation," "Sexuality," "Youth Sensationalization," and "Mental Health."

The work is visually engaging and thoroughly researched, and accompanied by an Exhibit Guide, richly documented with sources for those interested in exploring the topic further. With support from her Independent Study advisor HS Librarian Tobi Fineberg, and the New Lab, Shravya has broken ground with this exhibit.

Credit to Shravya for sharing this important work with the community! The visually stunning and intellectually compelling exhibit is on display until mid-May.
