Dalton Parents Warmly Welcome Head of School José M. De Jesús on Monday Night
More than 600 parents gathered at 583 Park Avenue on Monday night, September 12, to celebrate Dalton and warmly welcome our new Head of School José M. De Jesús.
Program speakers provided insight into the vision, values, and background of Dalton’s new leader. Board President Aly Jeddy said that he’s delighted that José is a teacher and commented that his every instinct is student-centered. Aly also said that José engenders respect and trust and conveys playfulness and authenticity. He urged families to pledge to be builders and stand behind José as he leads Dalton into the future.
Three of José’s close childhood friends Sheldon Gilbert, Founder & CEO of Proclivity Media; Javaid Khan, Head of the Middle Division at Horace Mann and a Dalton parent; and Eric Osorio, Associate Head of School for Teaching and Learning at Calhoun shared remarks. They were introduced by President of the PA Angélica Estevez; President of the Faculty Association Shira Kohn; and President of the Alumni Association Joe Franken ’03.
José’s remarks provided community members with a strong sense of who he is, why he is an educator, and what his hopes are for our community, especially our students. The room was energized when José shared a story about his formative years by playing music he loves — from salsa and pop to classical music and hip hop.
Members of the high school a capella group Sweet ’n Low invited guests to join them in singing Dalton’s school song. With this wonderfully affirming conclusion to the evening’s program, along with the opportunity to get to know José better, parents left feeling optimistic and excited for the future of our school.
