Computer Science Teacher Molly Josephs Discusses Elevating Student Voices Through Podcasting and Storytelling
Computer Science Teacher Molly Josephs presented with Facing History & Ourselves at the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Annual Convention on November 19. Prior to this year's convention, Molly spoke with Facing History to discuss how storytelling helps students find their unique voices and create connections across differences.
In the interview, Molly highlights This Teenage Life, a youth dialogue podcast she created in collaboration with teens, and discusses its impact and reach.
A forward from Molly:
Almost five years ago, while working at High Tech High, a project-based high school in San Diego California, I worked with teens to form This Teenage Life, a youth dialogue and podcasting program. I still run the program in the evenings and weekends with approximately 50 teens from around the globe (all of whom were former listeners to the show who reached out). We create content that helps young people feel seen, heard, and less alone, and we have over 400K listeners and a million downloads.
As an educator, I deeply believe in the power of supporting young people to leverage their tastes, interests, and identities to do work that really matters to them. This happens in my CS1 classes at Dalton where. students make websites and other digital projects they love. It happens in This Teenage Life when youth create stories that matter to them and help others.
I am so grateful to have a teaching practice that aligns with my core values as an educator and to be able to speak about it with an organization as thoughtful and mission-aligned as Facing History and Ourselves.
