Lunar New Year Celebration Performances and Workshops Dazzle Students
The Dalton community enjoyed a week of exciting assemblies, workshops, and activities in the lead-up to Lunar New Year 2023.
The celebration began with Tuesday’s Middle School Assembly in the Martin Theater. Hosted by the Mandarin Team and MS assistant director Alexis Williams, the assembly featured award-winning Chinese acrobat Lina Liu and her team, who delivered a dazzling performance for the students. The event included the traditional lion dance, Chinese yo-yo, and umbrella and plate juggling.
On Thursday, with the additional support from the HS assistant director Nicholas Lechich and Dance Teacher and Coordinator Randi Sloan, the performances continued at the HS Assembly as Lina returned along with three additional dancers. In addition, Dalton Music Department Co-chair Bill Solomon and Music Teacher Yachin Pan played a song using a traditional Chinese instrument, "Pipa" and a viola, and senior Mandarin students performed a Chinese song.
Later that night, more than 300 community members gathered in the 89th Street Cafeteria for the official Lunar New Year celebration. Programming included a dumplings workshop, sugar painting, fan-making, Chinese calligraphy, games, delicious food, and more student performances. This event is hosted again by the Mandarin Team and co-sponsored by the APA (Asian Pacific American) parents group.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this wonderful Lunar New Year celebration!
